Curriculum & Pedagogy
- The curriculum at Millennium Charter Academy is one of the major differences you'll see when you compare us to conventional public schools. As a classical liberal arts school, we teach our students along the developmentally appropriate lines of the Trivium from kindergarten through twelfth grade. - Thank you for your interest in Millennium Charter Academy! MCA is moving forward thoughtfully and purposefully, guided by a well-defined mission and vision. It is a strong school focused on high-quality academic instruction, profound moral character development, and active parental involvement. With a very talented and enthusiastic staff, we strive to instill in all our students a love of learning, the ability to reason well, and the skills and courage to lead with integrity. We are distinctive for attention to individual students, innovative approaches, keen sense of family, and the high quality of our teachers. We also utilize the surrounding region as an enlarged classroom laboratory. Enrollment is offered in grades kindergarten through twelve.

Athletics
- MCA ATHLETICS
  FIERCE COMPETITORS WITH FIRST-CLASS SPORTSMANSHIP
  As an outgrowth of MCA's physical education program, the Academy provides two levels of athletic participation for students. One is club-level athletics, which offers a wide age-range of students the opportunity to engage in various types of activities from a low to a high level of personal involvement and competitiveness. The second level is interscholastic athletics. Teams at this level are fiercely competitive and equally mannerly.

Lower School
- Our Lower School encompasses grades kindergarten through five and is led by Lower School Director Ms. Lissa Carter. Students enjoy a rich curriculum of Core Knowledge, Core Knowledge Language Arts, Everyday Math, and six specialty areas: Technology, Visual Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Library, and Physical Education. Students get a 30 minute recess period daily, and much attention is paid to character development.

Upper School
- Upper School Director Dr. Jarrid Looney leads our Upper School, which includes grades 6-12 and is further divided into the dialectic school (grades 6-8) and the rhetoric school (grades 9-12). These students learn to think logically and to express themselves eloquently and persuasively. As they mature and accept more responsibility, they gain more independence. In addition to their core subjects of math, language arts, science, history, and geography, students in the dialectic school have over sixty exploratory courses from which to choose. Students in the rhetoric school enjoy rich core classes, along with elective options in the humanities, entrepreneurship, and STEM. Upperclassmen also have the options of Advanced Placement courses and dual enrollment with Surry Community College.

Biography

Maria’s journey in education began at Spring Arbor University in Michigan where she received a Bachelor of the Arts with a concentration in elementary education and minors in integrated science and sports science. Maria joined the MCA family in the fall of 2009. Currently, she resides in Mt. Airy with her husband and their three lovely daughters. Together, they love exploring the outdoors and staying active.
