Welcome!

We are an independent public school, serving grades kindergarten through twelve, charging no tuition and open to all.

We teach a classical, liberal arts curriculum.

We strive to create intelligent, virtuous citizens.

We seek truth, goodness, and beauty in all that we do.

Classical Education is the foundation of our school.

MCA offers a curriculum and culture in the classical, liberal arts tradition founded and practiced for centuries in Western civiization, integrating the humanities, the arts, and the sciences. It is a whole curriculum for the whole person.

The Three Pillars of MCA

l

Scholarship

From the start, students receive a solid base of content knowledge, interacting with that knowledge in innovative ways. Throughout their years at MCA, students learn to think well about the content they’ve learned and then learn to articulate their own views, speaking well, writing well, and engaging in civil public discourse.

Character

We maintain high aspirations for our student body, highlighted by our Honor Code and our Expectations and Habits posted in every classroom. The goal of our principle-based discipline is the development of strong convictions about truth and virtue in our students.

Community

Whether learning from or contributing to the community, locally or globally, our students use their passions and resources in helping others. Students connect to the community through frequent field trips, raising funds for those in need, or participating in civic activities.

Upper School held its annual Honor Day and National Honor Society induction on Constitution Day, September 17. Throughout the day, students participated in paideia seminars and other special activities to focus on honor. In the afternoon, 8th - 12th grade students gathered in the gym to witness the annual National Honor Society Induction, which was also live-streamed to 6th-7th grades. Following the induction ceremony, student speakers Calvin DeVore and Tristan Shockley gave inspiring speeches about respect and commitment, respectively. Keynote speaker, Mr. Scott Freeman (a thirty-year Marine having served in Afghanistan and other tours, radio announcer, and owner of The Loaded Goat, further elaborated on honor. After his speech, as with the student speeches, there was resounding applause. Several students spoke with Mr. Freeman about his remarks and his personal history in the military. We appreciate him and his time with our students very much!

This was a wonderful event that displayed the fruit of a classical education and at the same time continued to point our students to truth, goodness, and beauty, strengthening the culture of our school.

We are so proud of our students and faculty! This week, the State of North Carolina released results of end of grade (EOG) and end of course (EOC) testing for the 2020-2021 school year, and we are thrilled to report that MCA scored significantly above state and local school averages in almost every category and at every level of testing! The data presented here compares our charter school with the averaged data from local area school districts from which most of our students come. If you’d like to see the scores for yourself, please visit www.dpi.nc.gov/2020-21-school-assessment-and-other-indicator-data.

MCA has never taught to the test, yet our results are good. Why? Because even under pandemic conditions, our great faculty delivers a great curriculum through a classical education philosophy, which proves itself daily. Are we satisfied with these results, or satisfied that we rank well in comparison? No! We recognize that the pandemic has caused test scores across the whole state to be lower than in past years, but this is not an excuse to rest on our laurels. We are striving daily to improve our delivery of education, to improve ourselves as a staff and faculty, and to focus even more diligently on the true, the good, and the beautiful in our world.
