How is lunch handled? 6) What is the inclement weather policy? 7) Are there any pick-up and drop-off procedures? 1) How many classes does MCA have? MCA has grades Kindergarten - Eight. For the 2007/2008 school year, there are 3 classes each of grades K-4 , with 2 classes each of grades five - eight. An additional fifth grade will be added for the 2008/2009 school year, with the third section of sixth grade added the year after that, and so on, until there are three classes within all grades. Classes in grades kindergarten through five have 18 students in each. Middle school classes have 22 students in each class. [To Top] 2) What is the discipline policy at MCA? Moral character development is one of the three pillars on which MCA is established. It is, as it should be, an essential, integral part of school life. The fact is, we believe, that whether one chooses to intentionally address this facet of life, character is the genesis of all attitudes and behaviors related to one's education and to the rest of life. Therefore, it is incumbent on the Academy, as well as parents, to thoughtfully engage in the development of our students' character. We strive to come along-side our parents in their responsibility to rear their children. This is a united effort. With daily attention to a student's character, MCA provides nurture and discipline in a loving and consistent manner. Like our students' parents, we have high expectations of our student body. Our expectations, six in number and expounded by eight habits, are posted in every classroom. And they are just that- expectations. They are not rules, but high standards to which we hold our students accountable. We consciously treat our students with respect, owing to the value conferred on each at birth. Consequently, neither shaming nor rewards are used to manipulate behavior, but rather honest personal engagement with appropriate consequences. Whether in academics or in issues of character, MCA accepts students where they are and the goal of every interaction is nothing short of growth. Furthermore, we hold to the adage that " a pupil can never surpass his or her master." We, the faculty and staff, therefore, seek to continually improve our own selves. This also demonstrates to the students in a very real way the importance of personal development. The Family Handbook speaks in detail to behavior and discipline. [To Top] 3) Can I get a tour of the school? Certainly! We love to show off our school. Tours are regularly scheduled for the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 9 AM. If that time is inconvenient for you, please contact Lu Ann Browne, Director of Development, at 336.789.7570, ext. 1101, or e-mail mca@mcacademy.com to schedule a tour that fits your schedule. [To Top] 4) What time does the school day begin and end? School begins at 8:00 AM and dismisses at 2:30 PM. Children may enter the building after 7:45 AM but not before since there is not staff to supervise the children prior to that time. [To Top] 5) I've heard that MCA does not cook meals. How is lunch handled? MCA students may bring their lunch from home, or they may order catered boxed lunches from area restaurants. At the beginning of every month, each student received two copies of a calendar with the vendors and menu selections for each day listed. The parents and students determine which, if any, days they desire to purchase lunch and mark it on both calendars. One calendar, along with payment, is returned to the school, with the second calendar kept at home for reference on which days lunch was purchased. Students may purchase milk or water to drink at lunch. Lunches are $3.00 daily (including milk). Milk alone is $ . 25, and water is $ . 50. Some students buy lunch everyday. Some students pack a lunch everyday. Most students buy lunch some days and pack lunch some days. There are 3 lunch periods. Catered lunches are delivered fresh at the beginning of each period. If you would like more information on vendors or menus, you may contact Pepper Rotenizer, Middle School Office Manager, at 336.789.7570, ext, 1302. [To Top] 6) What is the inclement weather policy? Information regarding school closings or delays will be on radio stations WSYD, WPAQ, and WTQR, and on television station WXII. You can also sign up at WXII to receive an email announcing school closing or delay. Furthermore, as soon as a decision is made, an announcement is posted on the school's voice mail. That number is 789-7570, extension 4. If no announcement of delay of cancellation of school is heard, you should assume school is scheduled as usual. In some cases, school may be cancelled after students arrive. This will also be announced on the same radio and television stations. Parents should make arrangements beforehand concerning where their child is to go if school is dismissed. Childcare through Mayberry Learning is typically closed when school closes early due to inclement weather. [To Top] 7) Are there any pick up and drop off procedures? MCA now has more parking space and more driveway space. What a wonderful benefit of our expansion! Not only will it allow most, if not all drivers, to have proper parking spots during special school functions, it also means there is more “stacking space”. This will allow drivers dropping off and picking up students to wait more safely in the MCA driveway than when cars backed up on Old Springs Road. To facilitate the drop off and pick up process, all cars should enter and exit the school grounds via the lower driveway off Old Springs Road, located near the new baseball field, using right turns only. The entrance closer to the school is closed during these times, helping to alleviate congestion on Old Springs Road. Class starts promptly at 8:00 AM, and students may be dropped off at 7:45. Before 7:45 there is no supervision and children may not be in the building. Pick-up is between 2:30 and 2:45. Please be prompt, and thanks for your consideration!
