MCA
firmly
believes
that
art
is a valuable part of the educational process. The Academy introduces students in kindergarten to great works of music and art. This is continued through the Middle School. Students also have the opportunity to learn applied music, music theory, and applied visual art. Through excellent instruction, students are taught vocabulary, various genres, artistic styles, history, and artists. For art, they learn and experiment with various techniques and mediums, from fabric to pastels to black and white photography. For music, they learn and experience various music genres, instruments, rhythms, and techniques. And all of this is integrated into the curriculum. With the completion of the Phase 1 Expansion, MCA has an instructional art classroom, 2 art galleries, and a dedicated music room. Students in all grades receive weekly art instruction that is tied directly into their current studies. For example, when second graders study Thomas Jefferson, their art lesson may be on architecture, beginning with Monticello. When fifth graders study Africa, their art lesson may consist of making African masks. Students are exposed to a full variety of mediums during the course of the year. Additional tuition-based art classes are taught in MCA's After School Academy if parents and students are interested. Students also receive weekly music lessons. For the 2006/2007 school year, students in grades four through seven have regular music class. Lower grades participate in music in the classroom and in theatrical music and plays taught by qualified theatrical volunteers. Middle schoolers receive in-school instruction in lap dulcimer, acoustical guitar, and violin over the course of a year. Instruction in other musical instruments is available in MCA's After School Academy. |
