Scholarship is one of the three driving forces in MCA’s mission. Millennium’s curriculum is built on the classical, liberal arts tradition, integrating the humanities, the arts and the sciences. Core Knowledge provides the rich content for this curriculum in Lower School, while North Carolina standards provide a framework for scope and sequence. Upper School builds on the Core Knowledge Sequence by again spiraling through history and science. Classic literature and primary sources in history provide opportunities for Socratic discussions of the great questions of the Western tradition. Throughout the grade levels, strong teachers, rich materials, and an environment conducive to learning all blend to provide Millennium students with a solid educational foundation.
From Grades K-12, teachers employ an instructional design model known as “Teaching with the End in Mind.” The ultimate end is the virtuous citizen, so each unit of instruction is designed beginning with a big human question whose answer will contribute to the formation of character that is the goal. Once the big question is chosen, teachers design content, skills, activities and assessments that will help students understand the overarching questions.
Students study case law and participate in mock trial in a real courtroom in this competition sponsored by Law Related Education, an outreach of the North Carolina Bar Association.
Patriots’ Pen Essay Contest
The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors an annual essay contest in which children write on a patriotic theme. We are proud to have had both regional and state winners in this competition.
Letters about Literature Contest
Sponsored by the National Library Association, this contest requires students to write a letter to an author in which they explain how the author’s book impacted their lives. MCA had a national winner in this contest in 2011.
Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee
In 2010, a Millennium student participated in the national bee in this classic spelling competition. For several years, Millennium has hosted the regional contest for charter schools.
North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF)
Science fair is a grand tradition at Millennium, and we consistently have students who win at the state level.
NC Science Olympiad (NCSO)
An array of competitions in every area of science, from building to baking to biology, awaits students at the Science Olympiad. This fun-filled competition builds teamwork as well as brain work.
Through this national enrichment, club, and competition program, students have the opportunity to showcase their strengths in mathematics.
North Carolina Student Academy of Science (NCSAS) Research Competition
The NCSAS invites students to write a paper on the research completed at science fair and to present the paper to a panel of scientists. Millennium students always fare well in this competition.
National History Day
Students complete original research on historical topics of interest, and the research projects are entered into competition at the local and regional levels, and ultimately state and national levels. Projects may include original dramatic works, papers, and videos.
